Paul Stamets - Psilocybin Mushrooms: Are Psilocybin and Psilocin the only 'active' ingredients for fighting depression, cognitive decline and PTSD?
JUNE 23RD, 3:00-4:30PM PST
Webinar Topic: Psilocybin is one molecule of several that can cause altered states of consciousness. The focus has been on these ‘active’ molecules. Is there activity of other molecules that co-occur and are related to psilocybin that do not alter consciousness but have a demonstrable positive effect on brain health? I think so and will discuss our research that contributes to the science of consciousness. Psilocybin mushrooms have been used for thousands of years. Psilocybin as a molecule has been used for a few dozen. The reductionist view of medicine has been effective in discovering a molecular structure for treating bacterial infections, for instance. But the single-molecule medicines available for psychotherapists have failed to show the same level of positive outcome. Where and when can the use of the natural form of psilocybin mushrooms be appropriate for psychotherapy and cognitive health? How do you standardize a natural product? Could it be approved by federal health agencies? Does a patent like the one Compass has cross over to interfere with the use of natural products for therapeutic use?
