The term "Micro-dose" was coined in 2011 by Dr James Fadiman in the release of his book The Psychedelic Explorers Guide (which we highly recommend). He Defined it as approximately 1/10th of a hallucinogenic dose, or between 100 and 250mg for Psilocybin Mushrooms, and recommended it be taken once every 3 days. He suggested that dosing below the threshold of intoxication has the potential for nootropic benefits similar to those of a Macro-dose.
Recent research is congruent with Dr. Fadiman's postulations that taking minuscule amounts of Psilocybin may improve both convergent and divergent thinking, resulting in improved cognitive function, flexibility, creativity, and problem solving. Studies at the University of Bergen found that the respondents reported mostly positive effects after Micro-dosing, including improved mood, cognition, and creativity. Furthermore, these effects “often served to counteract symptoms especially from conditions of anxiety and depression.” While the preliminary results of studies already conducted are promising for the safety and efficacy of Micro-dosing wider trials with larger sample sizes are needed to completely understand the benefits of Micro-dosing.
Aside from the treatment of multiple psychological conditions, Psilocybin has undisputedly provable cognitive benefits, from the stimulation of neurogenesis (brain cell production and repair) to the secretion of Glutamate and BDNF (Brain Derived Neutrophic Factor). Glutamate is an important neurotransmitter who's main function is supporting cognition, learning and memory. Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor has been described as "Miracle-Gro for your brain." It stimulates growth, connections and activity.
So how does it feel to Microdose?
About an hour or two after ingesting the micro-dose, people report noticing an increase in focus and energy. Many users also find that it helps with weaning off — and staying off — anti-depressants and other addictive drugs. It can help lessen the side effects of withdrawal and even mitigate depression. Many purport its ability to increase empathy as well. The first time you Micro-dose you may feel slightly giddy or intoxicated, however the body quickly builds a tolerance to Psilocybin, and noticeable psychotropic effects are not usually felt after the first dose. When you Micro-dose you should not have to alter your daily routine! The two most prominent Micro-dosing schedules are the Stamets protocol and the Fadiman Protocol, with users most often dosing in the morning prior to breakfast.
Stamets protocol - 4 Days dosing followed by 2 Days off
Fadiman protocol - 1 Day dosing followed by 2 Days off
