Despite recent interest in the subject from individuals and institutions alike, there is still not a clearly defined scientific consensus on what micro-dosing is — like what constitutes a 'micro' dose, how often someone would take it, and precisely how its effects are felt.
What is clearly defined is the fact that individuals who micro-dose report higher levels of creativity, more energy, increased focus, improved relational skills, heightened spiritual awareness and generally enhanced cognitive function.
Professor David Nutt, who is the Edmond J. Safra Chair in Neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London in the United Kingdom, and his team critically reviewed existing research and came up with three components that may help define microdosing:
"The use of a low dose below the perceptual threshold that does not impair 'normal' functioning of an individual.
A procedure that includes multiple dosing sessions.The intention to improve well-being and enhance cognitive and/or emotional processes."
The researchers also note that a microdose as commonly defined as "approximately one-tenth of a recreational dose."
The review focused on psilocybin, which is the active compound in magic mushrooms. Prof. Nutt and colleagues chose psilocybin because it is closer than other psychedelic substances to becoming a clinically approved treatment.
In the nearly 10 years since psychologist and psychedelic researcher James Fadiman introduced the notion of micro-dosing psilocybin and devised a widely followed protocol for it, and the three years since micro-dosing psychedelics became the latest Silicon Valley “productivity hack,” there has been an exponential increase in interest on the topic.
Another trailblazing study on the effects of micro-dosing psychedelics by Prochazkova et al. (2018) set out to investigate how a micro-dose of a psychedelic substance (.33 grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms for average body weight) affected cognitive brain function in 36 study participants. The preliminary results of this study show that psychedelics positively affect cognitive meta-control policies by optimizing the balance between cognitive persistence and flexibility.
Accredited researchers and professionals across varied industries have incorporated micro-dosing into their daily routines and anecdotally reported benefits. We may have to wait years, due to the antithetical prohibition of these substances, for clinical trials to confirm the host of both psychological and physical benefits associated with Psilocybin.
